Why does my cat respond to peppermint?

When chewing Peppermint gum my cat, PJ goes a little crazy on me. He first gets all purring like and starts licking my face(he usually doesn't) then he can't sit still, then he starts biting. As soon as i throw the peppermint gum away he is back to a lump on a log.
