Hanging a ceiling fixture, need help.?

from the way you describe this, these two wires are from the switch loop. also, since you have a red wire in the box, you must have a two way switch arrangement. (light can be controlled by two different switches) if that was the way the fixture was connected before, it should be ok to reconnect the same way.
