Gene therapy is legal on an experimental level, and there are a number of trials underway for a variety of conditions, such as blindness. However, there are currently no FDA approved gene therapies in the US. Since you are familiar with the science, you may have read that retroviral vectors have received particular scrutiny for their potential to cause harm (cancer), but there are many viral and non-viral vectors that are effective for different conditions.
